The surface of standard gratings are coated with aluminum or gold and require
extreme care when handling. Handling should be done by the edges only. These
relatively soft coatings are vulnerable to fingerprints and numerous aerosols.
Scratches or other cosmetic defects do not, unless extreme, usually affect
optical performance. No attempt to clean a grating should be made without first
consulting Optometrics.
